| Play nice with non-Mac volumes
Unlike the “classic" Mac OS, OS X does Windows. Out of the box, you can easily connect to Windows servers and shares. However, as any Windows-centric IT person will tell you—vehemently—OS X isn't necessarily the best neighbor in the Network Neighborhood. Every time you access a remote Windows share (or an NFS volume), Mac OS X leaves behind .DS_Store detritus—files that are useful, but invisible, to Mac OS X while being useless, and completely visible, to Windows users. In addition, if you copy a file with a Mac OS resource fork to a non-Mac volume, that resource fork is copied as a second file; for example, if an image named IMG_0995.JPG has a Finder thumbnail—which resides in the file's resource fork—copying that image to a non-HFS volume will result in two files being created on the volume: IMG_0995.JPG and ._IMG_0995.JPG .

While all the insider and kin appointments were being made, Harmon and Hammond said nothing in protest. I don't know why these two just watched quietly while honesty and openness were burned to ash. We had no defenders. No one spoke up for us. There was not one stand-up guy on the whole commission. Harmon and Hammond stood shamed by their conscenting silence. But consistantly since then, they have responded to the avalance of revulsion from us. They have, in many ways, lead the charge to change this debacle into an opportunity for much better representative government. They have not used rear guard delaying tactics, like some have, hoping we would in time, forget. They have been proactive and aggressive in their proposals. They have conducted themselves well.
Younger Veterans at Greater Suicide Risk
Her team published its findings Tuesday in the online edition of the American Journal of Public Health. Military service comes with special challenges, and the 1999 Veterans Health Study found that nearly a third -- 31 percent -- of veterans were suffering depressive symptoms, a rate that's two to five times higher than observed in the general public. Now, as a new generation of soldiers returns from Iraq and Afghanistan, Zivin's team sought to better understand the risks depressed veterans face for suicide. To do so, they pored through data from the VA's National Registry for Depression for the years 1999 to 2004. Overall, the researchers looked at information on almost 808,000 veterans diagnosed with depressive symptoms; 1,683 (0.21 percent) of those veterans took their own lives.

If you can't visit relatives as often as you'd like, or you've got a kid away at school, you might want to get a Web cam for your computer.The Good Housekeeping Research Institute just tested dozens of Web cams. The institute's technical director John Kupsch says the new breed of computer Web cams deliver video images that are clearer than ever. "Web cams, which really enable you to talk over the Internet and see who you are talking with and allow them to see you, have really come down dramatically in recent years in price, where now you can get some really good units for substantially under a hundred dollars," he said. At the end of the institute's tests, there were three standouts. Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 -- $100 The institute's engineers tested 22 web cams and found that installation has become very easy.
Romero revitalizes ‘Dead’ with youth-savvy intellect
The film-industry press tends increasingly to hail Pittsburghs George A. Romero as the godfather of gore, in a smirking nod to his new picture, Diary of the Dead, and to the persistent influence of Romeros breakthrough film of 1968, Night of the Living Dead. The tacit, too-easy assumption here is that Romeros films rely more upon visceral shock value than upon narrative ferocity or scathing social criticism qualities that constitute his larger impact as a filmmaking artist. The medium is horror, of course a popular genre that had embraced gratuitous gore as a ticket-selling commodity several years before Romero had seasoned Night of the Living Dead with such incidental excesses. The message, however, is Romeros continuing usage of the genre as a vehicle for bigger and more troubling ideas about the fragile state of civilization.

With Surface, Microsoft is still rolling out its contained offering to food services and healthcare , but it will be partnering to move to the consumer market, which apparently is screaming for this thing. IPTV is the furthest along with major inroads into the U.S. and European markets. This all may be followed by Zune, which seems to have some really good marketing all of a sudden. This provides the promise of a packaged iPod killer with a new solid back end. The Xbox 360 is already expected to move into British Telecom homes as a set-top box, and PC OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are screaming to license. This represents what could be one of the most significant changes the company has ever seen, the products in the CE segment will improve, I just hope the company learns to more effectively use its sense of humor and doesn't lose it.
