Gun tragedies an accepted part of living in America The tragic murders of five women in a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park recently and two police officers and three others at a city council meeting in Kirkwood, Mo., Feb. 7 serve as a chilling reminder that any of us can be impacted by gun violence in this country, no matter where we are at any given moment. My prayers are with the families of all the victims. While there are certainly many factors involved in such heinous acts, the one fact that can’t be ignored is that guns are almost always used in these types of tragedies. Whether it’s a mall in Omaha, Neb., college campuses in Blacksburg, Va., or DeKalb, or a clothing store in Tinley Park, guns have been taking the lives of innocent victims at an alarming rate over the last year.

When Ricardo accepted the Northern Illinois job, Michael seized the chance to play for his father."I always wanted to play for my father at Colorado," Michael said. "Being so small made it harder to see if I'd be ready for the Big 12 level. Prep school really helped me get ready for the next level.
Santa Monica
The City of Santa Monica is offering competitive landscape grants up to $20,000 to help property owners move away from landscaping that drains resources like water and petroleum, and pollutes, to a landscape that reduces such impacts and mimics native flora and fauna.To qualify for a grant, a landscaping plan must include water-efficient irrigation, plus one or more of the following — California native plants, water-efficient plants, storm-water management systems, "graywater" systems, and/or other innovative water-saving features. Since 2005, local homeowners, apartment owners, businesses and schools have been awarded more than $400,000 in landscaping grants, city officials said.Applications for the current grant cycle will be accepted through March 27th. Today, as the profession shifts from negative and slide film to digital, we look at some of the leading visual artists of our time, from hard-bitten news photographers to up-and-coming artists. El-Ustaz At the old Akhbar El-Yom building, several walls swathed entirely in vivid pictures detailing Egypt's history welcome visitors to the photography department. Guarding the entrance is a small panel, a kind of shrine, the centerpiece of which is a portrait of chief photographer Mohamed Youssef, surrounded by smaller pictures of every single photographer who has followed him at the national newspaper empire. “He was the dean of photographers," says Farouk Ibrahim, manager of the photography department at Akhbar El-Yom, pointing out that Youssef was the first to break through colonial barriers, the first Egyptian to be trusted with managing a photography department's coverage of the nation at a daily national press outlet.
