Warren theaters begin to go digital
The move should increase movie quality for viewers while equipping Warren's theaters for the industry's evolution into live events. "There's no question that movies are going to remain 80 to 90 percent of our business," Warren said. "But the fact is the business is changing. There's 3-D productions like 'Beowulf' and Hannah Montana, live concerts like U2, opera and perhaps even live sporting events." Live events are a marketing niche that theaters are actively pursuing, said Patrick Corcoran, director of media and research for the National Association of Theater Owners. "Previously, live events and the networking necessary to distribute them didn't exist," he said. "Now, during the week when traffic isn't as heavy, operators will be able to bring in more niche, targeted programming like local sports, local and regional concerts." Already, live concerts and some opera performances are being simulcast into digital theaters around the country, Corcoran said.
MOVIE REVIEW & LISTINGS
He has visions of being under the sea in a diving bell representing his locked-in state. In other moments he soars above his condition on the wings of his butterfly persona. Is this an easy film to watch? Not exactly, but it is also infused with Bauby's sarcastic sense of humor and engages us with questions of what makes a life worth living. The ability to love and be loved ultimately offers the proof of life that allows Bauby to find grace. Dress Rehearsal Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) is making a nice transition from the small screen to the big, first with Knocked Up and now with 27 Dresses, a romantic comedy about a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times. Versatile James Marsden (X-Men, Hairspray, Enchanted) co-stars as the cynical wedding reporter who falls for her, and, as is the norm these days in romantic comedies, Judy Greer is the indispensible funny sidekick.
July 2007
After casting their votes on the agreement and before the final tally was announced, the body, on a hand vote, ironically rejected a nonbinding question to approve casino gambling in town. Only about half the voters remained on the high school athletic field for that tally."I don't think that's a true indication of how people feel, because so many people had left," said Marsha Brunelle, selectmen chairwoman.Asked if that outcome tainted the vote on the agreement, Mr. Marshall [Glenn Marshall, the Wampanoag chief] said: "It's the end of a hot day, people get tired, people leave. The true number is the one that got counted."But casino opponents would not minimize their victory."That's the root question," said Jacqueline Tolosko, president of the anti-casino group Casinofacts. "We're really encouraged.
'Reginald Filbert' at Garage Theatre: Call it a night
The play, which was the grand prize winner in the Festival of New Works at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre in 2006, does offer some surprises. Reginald talks a good deal about existentialism, and Stephanie speaks fluent French. Angel is a fan of Kafka. Knowles seems to be making the point that no matter how educated people become, they may be ill-prepared for what life throws their way, stymied by what they cannot learn in school. The play also makes time for Reginald to drink from Moby's fishbowl no fewer than four times, while Ben dips in twice. Most of the 26 people at Sunday's matinee shuddered and groaned each time a character took a swig from the cloudy water. One also must shudder that director Frank Licato and actor Vincent Sagona (Reginald), both of whom have done exemplary work around the state, must be so starved for cash that they took these jobs.
