Striking Writers Ready To Vote On New Deal; Return To Work Imminent
The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to recommend the contract to members and ask them to vote on a quick end to the walkout. By calling for separate votes on ending the strike and accepting the contract, the union cleared the way for the entertainment industry to return to work almost immediately. Membership meetings will be conducted Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles to allow writers to decide whether the strike should be called off, said Patric Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, West. "This the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years," Verrone said. The tentative contract secures writers a share of the burgeoning digital-media market, he said, including compensation for Internet-delivered TV shows and movies.
Mustangs win as Rasheed scores 25
DANVILLE Niveen Rasheed seemed as if she was everywhere Friday in leading the Monte Vista High girls basketball team to a hard-fought, 49-42 victory over Newark Memorial in the second round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. Rasheed was in the middle of the action all night for the Mustangs (25-2), who struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against the 2-3 zone the Cougars (18-11) used throughout the game. She scored a game-high 25 points, and was the defensive catalyst as well. "It was one of those nights where the ball wasn't dropping for us," Rasheed said. "They played us tough in their zone, and we were a little ragged offensively. I wanted to provide some energy on defense to try to get us going." Newark let the Mustangs know that they were going to be in for a battle early.

Einstein's theory of relativity, Supermassive Blackholes Black Holes spinning near the Speed of Light By Joshua Hill Wednesday, January 16, 2008 We've dedicated a lot of attention to black holes of late, with rogue holes roaming the universe and other holes shooting energy at harmless nearby galaxies. So it is not a surprise that the research keeps coming. Supermassive black holes, according to new research, are approaching the speed of light. Nine galaxies were examined by NASA using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and found each to contain black holes pumping out jets of gas in to the surrounding space. "We think these monster black holes are spinning close to the limit set by Einstein's theory of relativity, which means that they can drag material around them at close to the speed of light," said Rodrigo Nemmen, the study's lead author and a visiting graduate student at Penn State University.
